Ugo Nespolo
Ugo Nespolo was born in Mosso Santa Maria (Biella) and trained at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, where he graduated before going on to take a degree in Modern Literature. In the 1960s he turned to Pop Art and the new avant-garde movements, exhibiting at the Galleria Il Punto in Turin and the Galleria Schwarz in Milan.
His work cannot be pinned to a single movement: it is marked by irony, a playful spirit and a taste for juxtaposition, with references ranging from the Renaissance to the contemporary scene. In the 1970s he made experimental artist's films; in the following decades he moved freely between posters, ceramics, glass with Barovier & Toso, artist's books, sets and costumes for the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, and public works such as his commission for the Turin metro stations.
His most important exhibitions include the anthological show “La Bella Insofferenza” at Villa Croce in Genoa (1986), the retrospective at Palazzo Reale in Milan (1990) and “Nespolo + Napoli” at Palazzo Reale in Naples (2000), as well as solo shows in New York, Paris, Beijing and Hong Kong.
