Gianni Moramarco
The Turin-born artist Gianni Moramarco is an exemplary case: he has approached art as an experience in constant evolution, a never-static path of restless self-refinement.
Born in 1957, Moramarco came to his creative work by way of a technical career: after qualifying as a surveyor, he went on to university, where he chose to study architecture, while continuing to follow the passion for drawing and painting that had emerged in his teenage years.
By the age of twenty he was already known to the public for his flair, and he went on to exhibit in both Italian and international shows: in Ferrara in 2015, and in Taormina at Villa Hauser for the centenary of Greta Garbo, where he introduced the entirely new concept of “wearable art” – painted garments that can be worn on the body but also hung on the wall in a frame.
In 2019 the Turin newspaper “La Stampa” devoted an interesting article to Gianni Moramarco, and his home city finally recognised the rising star of a new way of understanding painting.
Today the artist is fully immersed in the life of his time, in a cultural and social world devoted to technology.
Persuasive, proud and imaginative.
His intense need to communicate leads him to take an active part in his painting, from within, connecting with the characters in his works and following the vital energy they express.
And so, having passed through the traditional path of canvas and acrylic, he has arrived at the up-to-date, contemporary technique of the digital pen and graphics tablet – with a nod to Canaletto’s camera obscura: he sets the backgrounds, positions the figures, creates the sections and, above all, plays with combinations of colour drawn from the infinite universe of tones and shades.
The final result is never immediate but the outcome of many prints and numerous trials. Each creation is an original artwork – energetic, distinctive, built up gradually until it pulses with a life of its own.
In some cases the artist opts for multiples printed with the Fine Art Giclée technique, a highly sophisticated inkjet print that he personally finishes with acrylic retouching or mixed-media additions.
His art takes on an eclectic, fairy-tale quality: from it emerge revelations halfway between reality and dream, drawn from the layers of the unconscious and released as dizzying, almost kaleidoscopic projections.
Like a flash of inspiration, Moramarco discovered a space that can go beyond limits – a “beyond” that breaks through the walls of time, place and perspective and expands into infinity, achieved by layering textured 3D animations over two-dimensional figures.
