Giancarlo Carmignani
Giancarlo Carmignani was born in Buenos Aires to Italian parents. He lived in Argentina until the age of five, when he moved with his family to Italy, first to Livorno and then to Pisa.
While still very young, Giancarlo began his journey as a self-taught painter. His work is devoted to depicting nature and the traditional Tuscan world in a “post-Macchiaioli” idiom, which was fundamental to his training. This experience gave him a mastery of technique and colour that in later years allowed him to present works of considerable note to the critics.
Carmignani's artistic path stands well apart from experimentalism, with all its reforms, revisions and ruptures. Better to live within one's own creative worlds than to resort to forced intellectual solutions, which often lack genuine motivation and lead to utterly repetitive mannerisms. Art, instead, comes about through unpredictable personal paths, fuelled by different passions and by sometimes contrasting, even opposing, routes – even if the results, naturally, point in the same direction. In the artist's canvases LIGHT always prevails: allusive and open, inviting a romantic reading of each scene. He is the genuine interpreter of a nature that is familiar to him, to which he knows how to lend that “magic” that gives his work the atmosphere of distant times and lost values.
His work is meant as a serene message of reflection and of love for life and for nature. He has taken part in group exhibitions and held solo shows, and his works are held in private collections.
